How do I start my child in school?

• Starting in District schools is done at the individual school site. To start your child(ren), please contact your individual school site. You will need the following documents for your child:
• One proof of residency (Utility bill, Telephone bill, Mortgage statement, etc.)
• Immunization records
• Address of prior school attended (so that a request may be sent to transfer your child’s records)
• Proof of age (Birth Certificate, statement by the local registrar or a county recorder certifying the date of birth, baptism certificate duly attested, passport, or when none of the forgoing is obtainable, an affidavit of the parent, guardian or custodian of the minor, or any other appropriate means of proving the age of the child as prescribed by the governing board of the school district.
• Proof of current physical examination (In order to meet State requirements, must have occurred after March 1 of the year that the child is starting school.)

• The Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 changed the Kindergarten entry date from December 2 to September 1 so children begin at 5 years of age.

September 1 - for the 2023/2024 school year

• This program is designed for students who miss the cutoff date for Kindergarten, who will turn five between September 2, 2023 and April 2, 2024 and as space permits for children who will turn five between April 3, 2024 through the end of the school year. 

• All students entering the 7th grade must have the "Tdap" shot prior to starting school. This is a booster shot for Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertusis. Proof of this vaccine must be received in the school office of your child’s school by the first day of school. Seventh grade students who have not had this vaccination will not be able to attend school until this requirement is met. Call the school office if you have any questions, at (562) 902-4261.

• If you have a concern regarding your child’s school, you should first speak to your child’s teacher. If your concern is not resolved, then the concern should be brought to the attention of the principal at your school.
• If the concern is not resolved at that level, please submit in writing a formal letter to the Superintendent of Schools, located at 11019 Valley Home Avenue, Whittier, CA 90603. You may also contact the Superintendent’s Office at (562) 902-4203.

• Education is tuition-free in California. Schools are primarily financed by local property taxes and state funds.

• If you live in the Lowell Joint School District and do not want to attend your neighborhood school, an intra-district permit must be completed and approved. This form may be acquired at the District Office located at 11019 Valley Home Avenue, Whittier, CA 90603 or you can find the permit here.

• To apply for an inter-district permit, you must first contact your school or district of residence to obtain the paperwork to complete and submit to the appropriate offices.

• School lunch menus are available online. You may access them on our Nutrition Services page linked here.

• Special programs provided at the schools include art and vocal music (K-8), instrumental music (6-8), drama (7-8), and physical education (K-8). Lowell Joint is a one to one district, with each student being provided their own chromebook to use while at school during school hours. Libraries are available at all of the schools. Honors classes, STEM classes, and after-school sports are offered at the junior high school.

• Department of Justice and FBI fingerprint clearance are required of volunteers whose responsibilities may result in unsupervised work with students. Unsupervised refers to situations and/or volunteer roles in which the volunteer will be alone with one or more students. Examples include: one-on-one tutoring in a private space, facilitating yard duty, or a group field trip without a District staff member nearby.

• Agencies are not allowed to share the confidential information required in a livescan request. The Lowell Joint School District is liable for all volunteers registered through the District and must request a livescan for all volunteers.
